Tamil Movie Kanchivaram and Prakash Raj win National Award 2009 |

Filmmaker Priyadarshan's Tamil film 'Kanchivaram', a period drama about silk weavers in the south, was chosen as the best film at the 55th National Film Awards announced here.

Prakash Raj was given the National Award for Best Actor for his performance. Kanchivaram directed by Priyadarshan. The official announcement of the 55th National Film Awards came in today. The film shot in the background of Kanchivaram's handloom silk industry from the 1920s to 1948, Kanchivaram is a story about a non-political weaver, who leans against communism, and soon becomes a revolutionary leader and a proponent of the ideology, only to find themselves caught between personal needs and his pursuit of social equality.


Tamil actor Prakash Raaj beat off competition from Bollywood superstars Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan to bag the Best Actor Award for his role in 'Kanchivaram', which portrays the lives of the silk weavers of Kanchipuram in pre-Independence era.

Raaj had previously won Best Supporting Actor award for his 'Iruvar' in 1998 and also a special Jury Award in 2003.

Veteran filmmaker Adoor Gopala krishnan has been the best director's prize for his film 'Naalu Pennungal'. This will be his seventh national award.

He was named among the many other winners of the National Film Awards announced for 2007 by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting here today.
